University of Eastern Finland and University of Oulu have started experiments on expanding fiber optic measurements to other synovial joint tissues in addition to previously established measurements on articular cartilage. While MIRACLE project is focused on giving surgeons objective information about articular cartilage health during arthroscopic procedures, other tissues within synovial joints might also provide information about the health of the joint.
This pioneering work aims to explore development of additional diagnostic tools for arthroscopic procedures and provides further possibilities in expanding the future diagnostic toolkit for synovial joint diseases such as osteoarthritis.
These experiments are important part of scientific exploration goals for the project and will provide opportunities for new discoveries. The multi-discipline expertise of partners within the consortium provide insight from years of experience from the tissue level laboratory protocols to state-of-the-art analytical tools.
