The Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) through the CBQF research center is working in the development of a suitable business model for the commercialization of the mid-infrared (MIR) arthroscopy device developed in the MIRACLE project.

The aim of the UCP team is to analyse the relevant markets and understand the current user (orthopedic surgeons) pains, taking into account different realities when performing arthroscopy within different patients, within different pathologies, and in different countries/health systems. Therefore, we have been reaching several health professionals through different communication channels to construct a go-to-market strategy that better assesses difficulties and brings tailored solutions using the MIRACLE device.

The value proposition of the MIRACLE device is to be a ‘scanner’ that allows surgeons to obtain an ‘objective and quantitative analysis of the joint tissue properties via infrared spectroscopic evaluation during arthroscopy surgery’, providing a better and accurate diagnostic during the surgical procedure (which is not possible using the diagnosis techniques available in the market), delivering more information to the surgeon prior to the final decision making. Nevertheless, the current arthroscopies where joint tissue is assessed by the surgeons uses the palpation technique provided through a hook probe. One of the major breakthroughs of the MIRACLE device is the combination of a hook probe with the infrared analysis providing a synergic final assessment of the joint.

Besides the human application, as a secondary market the MIRACLE device can also be used in equine orthopedic surgery – an additional added value for the MIRACLE device, with application in the early diagnose and decision making in the equine surgery. The equine veterinary services have been estimated to be a multibillion-dollar industry, mainly associated with different activities, such as horse racing, competitive riding and leisure[1].
